Former clubs, teammates, opponents and countless fans from around the world have shared their support for Van der Sar

The former goalkeeper of Holland, Ajax and Manchester United, among others, was hospitalized with a brain haemorrhage

The football world has united around Edwin van der Sar after the former Holland and Manchester United goalkeeper was taken to hospital with a brain haemorrhage.

Dutch club Ajax, where Van der Sar started his playing career and it became CEO in 2016 before stepping down in Mayreleased a statement announcing the news.

“Edwin van der Sar has had a haemorrhage around the brain. He is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition,” Ajax said on Twitter. “Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery.. We are thinking of you,” the club said on social media.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that Van der Sar was on holiday on a Croatian island when he fell ill.

Considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world of all time, Van der Sar played for Ajax from 1990 to 1999 and won the Champions League in 1995. He raised the European Cup in 2008 with Manchester United after going through Juventus and Fulham.

Van der Sar is also second Most capped Dutch player of all time, with 130 caps international. Returned to Ajax in 2012 as marketing director before being promoted to CEO four years later.

Another club, Fulham, also posted their support on Twitter, writing: “Everyone at Fulham Football Club We wish Edwin a speedy recovery.. We are thinking of you.”

Rio Ferdinand, Van der Sar’s former teammate at United who won four Premier Leagues, two League Cups and the 2008 Champions League together with the goalkeeperhe wrote: “and he is a fighter. Our thoughts are with the Van Der Sar family!”

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has also posted his support for Van der Sar on social media. “Difficult opponent to beat but what a goalkeeper and man. My thoughts are with him, wishing him a speedy recovery, my friend.”

Former goalkeeper Mark Crossley, who played under Van der Sar at Fulham, tweeted: “My former teammate Edwin Van Der Sar, I pray for you my friend for a speedy recoverya real gentleman and a great concierge, a pleasure to ‘work next door’.
