“You Must Visualize Success”: Mireia Belmonte and Her Five Keys to Reaching the Top of Sport | icon

It was Mireia Belmonte herself who said that “to be successful, we must first believe that we can be”. She believed her, wow she did, becoming the most successful Spanish swimmer in our history with two silver medals at the 2012 London Olympics; she won the Rio 2016 Olympic gold, where she also won a bronze, and the 2017 world championship as major prizes. But the biggest leap of faith for the woman from Badalona would have occurred a few days ago, when injuries cut short her brilliant career and she was forced to cling to a positive attitude and large doses of patience to come back stronger in the face of that triumphant return that is already looming on the horizon. “It was a real challenge in which mental work was essential. When I’m injured, I focus on my rehabilitation and set realistic goals. Also, I try to stay motivated by visualizing my goals and remembering my passion for swimming,” she confesses.

Mireia Belmonte opts for the Hyundai TUCSON Plug-in Hybrid, an SUV that allows you to get around the city center thanks to the ZERO label and with a 100% electric mode that offers a range of up to 74 km.

The goal of Mireia Belmonte, the swimmer who has been in the elite for the longest time (more than 20 years), is none other than the Paris Games in the summer of 2024. In them, she not only aspires to continue giving her better than itself but also to continue to best represent our country. The swimmer’s confidence and motivation, as she explained to ICON, are at their peak: “I’m more excited than ever. Facing and overcoming obstacles has strengthened me and fueled my desire to continue competing at the highest level.” Her words, which could be signed by any young athlete at the dawn of her career, ring with special meaning in the mouth of a brand new Olympic standard-bearer. That ambition and unconventionality, she defends, are two of the characteristics she has in common with Hyundai, the automaker of which she is an ambassador and which shares that position of reference and leadership with her. “The ability not to settle and keep improving is essential to stay on top and achieve success. Like the Hyundai TUCSON, which has proven to be the best-selling car in 2022, it is important to stay focused, persevere and constantly strive for excellence.”

It was precisely the road, and the innumerable sensations that a steering wheel gives to those who drive it, one of his precious tools in this shooting process. In the few moments in which a professional athlete finds herself in a busy schedule of training and competitions, Belmonte is committed to enjoying the kilometers ahead with her “great travel companion”, the Hyundai TUCSON. “I love going out on the weekends and exploring new places. Driving gives me a feeling of freedom and allows me to switch off and relax.”

Although it is available in several electrified versions, the Catalan one favors the Plug-in Hybrid model, which fits perfectly into a lifestyle that favors sustainability and environmental awareness. An SUV with defined and futuristic lines that allows you to circulate in the city center thanks to the ZERO label and with a 100% electric mode that offers a range of up to 74km, ideal for routine trips, such as going from home to the pool. Nor are the company’s innovative technology, pioneering security, and undeniable power sacrificed. If the Royal House congratulated Belmonte for “flying over water”, the TUCSON does it on asphalt with its overall 256 HP. “As a hybrid electric vehicle, it helps protect the environment. Also, it drives great and gives me a lot of confidence. You reduce emissions and what’s more, it’s great! He goes with me everywhere,” confirms his host.

The Korean brand has spent years demonstrating its commitment to Spanish sport; a support that extends, for example, to the men’s and women’s teams of Atlético de Madrid and to the Superbike world champion Ana Carrasco. And, just as Hyundai is the only automaker with up to five electric technologies, Mireia Belmonte also confesses that she has up to five engines that propel each of her strokes towards her success. Discipline, passion, resilience and teamwork are some of the keys to the 32-year-old swimmer’s triumphant career, not forgetting her essential winning mentality: “It is a mental attitude that takes performance to the highest level; It involves believing in yourself, visualizing success and facing every competition with determination and confidence”. A mentality characteristic of the brand which, in addition to making its flagship the best-selling car in Spain last year, also won the 2023 World Car of the Year award with the IONIQ 6, icon of the new era of electric mobility.

Connectivity in the Hyundai TUCSON is key. All navigation, information, entertainment and air conditioning systems are controlled via touch via its 10.25'' screen. It also supports voice or smartphone control.

But as Hyundai and Mireia Belmonte know well, the difficult thing is not to reach the top, but to stay. In the case of the athlete, who has been grabbing titles since she was 13, she attributes her maverick spirit and lifelong passion for the water to her ability to continue hungry for the top step of the podium after more than two decades in the ‘elite. “In the water I experienced moments of happiness, self-improvement and connection with myself. Every time I enter the pool I feel gratitude for the opportunity to keep swimming and to chase my dreams,” she concludes. A gratitude undoubtedly shared by all those who vibrate for each of her undertakings and which will surely grow even more at the next Paris Olympics.
